Why This Day Is Special

This day is observed globally, often on the last day of February, to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to diagnosis, treatment, and support for individuals living with them. It aims to shed light on the challenges faced by patients and their families, including delayed diagnoses, lack of effective treatments, and social isolation. The day advocates for equitable healthcare access and greater research investment for rare conditions. It promotes solidarity and understanding for these often-overlooked patient populations.

History Behind the Day 

Rare Disease Day was first launched by EURORDis (European Organisation for Rare Diseases) and its Council of National Alliances in 2008. It chose the rarest day of the year, February 29th (in leap years), and February 28th in common years. The campaign has since grown into a global movement, with thousands of events taking place worldwide. It aims to bring together patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and policymakers.

 A disease is generally considered "rare" if it affects a small percentage of the population (e.g., fewer than 1 in 2,000 people in Europe, or fewer than 200,000 people in the US). There are over 7,000 known rare diseases, and new ones are constantly being identified. Many rare diseases are genetic and can be life-threatening or chronically debilitating. Collaboration among researchers and pharmaceutical companies is essential for developing treatments.

Rare Disease Day is observed today to raise awareness about rare diseases and the challenges faced by individuals and families living with them.
