Why This Day Is Special?

World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on May 23 to raise awareness about the importance of turtles and tortoises in our world. These ancient reptiles have been around for over 200 million years, but many species are now at risk due to habitat loss, pollution, and illegal trade. In India, turtles like the Indian Star Tortoise and the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle are found in various regions, including the coastal areas of Odisha and Gujarat.

History Behind the Day

World Turtle Day was established in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of all species of tortoises and turtles. The day was created to help people celebrate and protect these reptiles and their disappearing habitats around the world.
