 About the Day

Telangana Formation Day is observed annually on June 2 to commemorate the official creation of India’s 29th state, Telangana, in 2014. It marks the culmination of a long-standing movement rooted in identity, development, and the aspiration for self-governance. The day is a celebration of the region’s distinct language, rich cultural heritage, and collective resilience.


 History Behind the Day

The demand for a separate Telangana state dates back to the 1950s following the merger of the Hyderabad state with Andhra Pradesh. The movement gained momentum over the decades due to perceived neglect in areas like employment, irrigation, and education. After years of peaceful protests and political negotiations, the Indian Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act in 2014, officially bifurcating Andhra Pradesh and creating Telangana on June 2. K. Chandrashekar Rao was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the new state.
