World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, is celebrated annually on June 21 to honor the universal language of music. From community concerts to street performances, it’s a celebration of joy, creativity, and human connection through sound.


 History Behind the Day

World Music Day began in France in 1982 as a vision by then French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and music director Maurice Fleuret. The idea was simple yet powerful: encourage musicians of all skill levels to perform in public spaces for free, turning cities into open concert halls. The date—June 21—was chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, symbolizing brightness and celebration. Since then, over 120 countries, including India, have embraced this festival of music.
