Why This Day Is Special?

🐜 World Pest Day, observed on June 6, aims to raise awareness about the critical role of pest management in protecting public health, food safety, and the environment. Established in 2017, this day emphasizes the importance of controlling pests that can spread diseases, damage property, and disrupt ecosystems.

History Behind the Day

The inaugural World Pest Day ceremony was held at the Beijing Hotel on June 6, 2017. Initiated by the Chinese Pest Control Association, the event was co-sponsored by the Federation of Asian and Oceania Pest Managers’ Association (FAOPMA), the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), and the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations (CEPA). The day was established to highlight the significance of pest control in safeguarding public health and the environment.

  • Pests are organisms that spread diseases, cause destruction, or constitute a nuisance. Common pests include ants, rodents, termites, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and bed bugs. 
  • Flies taste with their feet. A fly’s taste receptors, called chemoreceptors, are located in their feet.
  • Cockroaches have been around for over 200 million years. They lived during the Jurassic period.
  • Raccoons have hands with five fingers, which are nimble enough to unlace shoes.
  • Mosquitoes are attracted to the odor given off by sweaty feet and socks.
  • Scorpions give birth to their babies alive rather than laying eggs.

World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on June 14 , honors the birth of Dr. Karl Landsteiner , who discovered the blood groups A, B, AB, and O. This day raises awareness about the importance of regular blood donation and thanks voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts .
